Time to find was written about testing the boundaries of pursuing a relationship and making the statement that there is so little time and I'm just looking for a small slice.
This song composed at the closing of the year 2025. The name "25 licks" evokes the memory of a tv add including an owl determining the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop drop. Which is 3. But no, 25 licks refers to the number of guitar licks I have learned in my life up until, and including the year 2025. It ended up being a mash-up of from two festival rotations, where I picked these up. I am especially grateful to the fest pickers who shared their licks.
Memories in a Box was written after an old friend contacted me whilst finding a box in her attic with my name on it. As the same time my guitar "box" had an issue with the top and glue. This kicked the idea that a guitar is a box in which the player holds and recovers memories. The memories are of the times spent with the friend.
Temporarily Content was composed after a phone conversation with my daughter whereby I asked "how are you?" knowing that we were both experiencing a great loss. She responded with "I'm Content". I responded, "yes, Temporarily". From there it was about living in the moment and finding content.
And then came the request for an old song I used to play, Harvest Moon. This is a song that I used to play a lot but had never learned to play the drop D version Neil does because I always figured it was hard enough to learn regular tuned guitar. This time, after 40 somethin years I went after the official version. In this process I starting playing drop D and in particular the very last chord in the song. I was so enamored by this chord I created this song. I call it Harvest Moon Last Chord.
A friend at the pub said, "Hey, why don't you write a song about a leaf falling from a tree?". That was all it took, I went home and figured this one out. Turned into the analogy about how just as in life, you grow, face challenges, hang on to the branch, and eventually fall to the ground.
There is a server at my local pub who captured me with her smile. While leaving one night I said to her "I Like Lookin at You". She smiled and responded with "you made my day". I went home and wrote I Like Lookin at You.
When I sit down to write new songs, it has been easy to come up with sad topics. One day I said to myself," Dog Gone It, I'm Gonna write a Happy Song". So I strummed in the key of D (Happy Key) for awhile and came up with this.
"Left footed Drummer" Came up with this when I started stompin on the cymbal. Hans told me about a web site where they had foot instruments galore. Not long before I ordered and received the cymbal. Not like the old days where I had to go done to the workshop and figure out how to build one, i.e. the "TonePodd Foot Clacker" I set it up with the kick drum on the left and began playing when Gary came over and said hey "Are you left footed?". Took this and turned it into a wooing the girl song.
"Wouldn't have it any other way" Another pub sitting inspired song. This one was born out of the meeting of a girl in which when I turned to meet, was met with the Flash of a Twinkle in her Eye. I left obsessed with the idea of light bouncing back and forth between peoples eyes and how a whole other level of communication occurs. The next morning I sat back and wrote this about the power of a sparkling eye.
